Man Asian Literary Prize

Out of seven authors, three Indian have been figured to compete for the 2011 Man Asian Literary Prize. The Man Asian Literary Prize is given annually to the best novel by a writer from one of 26 countries in South Asia and East Asia. To be eligible, a book must either have been written in English or translated into English. The winning author is awarded $30,000 and the translator (if any) $5,000. Novelists Chang-rae Lee (“The Surrendered”) and Vikas Swaru (“Q&A,” the novel upon which “Slumdog Millionaire” was based) also served as judges this year.

Previous winners of the Man Asian Literary Prize include Chinese writers Bi Feiyu (“Three Sisters”) and Su Tong (“The Boat to Redemption”) and Miguel Syjuco (“Illustrado”), of the Philippines.

Banana Yoshimoto, Japan - The Lake (Melville House)
Four of the shortlisted novels were originally written in English; the novels from South Korea, China and Japan are all judged in translation.

69th Golden Globe Awards

The 69th Golden Globe Awards were conferred from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 15, 2012. Multiple winners for the night included the silent film The Artist which won three awards and The Descendants winning two awards.

Man Booker International Prize

American novelist Philip Milton Roth, is a Jewish American novelist and winner of National Book Award, known for books like “Goodbye, Columbus” and “Portnoy’s Complaint” has been honoured with the biennial 60,000 pounds Man Booker International Prize. Roth, a Pulitzer Prize winner, was among the 13 finalists, who included Canada-based writer of Indian origin Rohinton Mistry. The other contenders for the Man Booker International 2011 were: Juan Goytisolo (Spain), James Kelman (UK), John le Carré (UK), Amin Maalouf (Lebanon), David Malouf (Australia), Dacia Maraini (Italy), Rohinton Mistry (India/Canada), Philip Pullman (UK), Marilynne Robinson (USA), Su Tong (China), Anne Tyler (USA) and Wang Anyi (China). He won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1998 for his novel,

David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism

Indian Journalist Pallav Bagla has been selected for the David Perlman Award, 2010. The award is given annually by the American Geophysical Union. Pallav Bagla is the first Indian to get this award. He has been awarded the prize for his articles on the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers.
